On September 26, 2019, ESU 11 hosted a Professional Learning Community meeting for 6-12 grade English Language Arts teachers. PLCs are an ongoing process in which educators work collaboratively to achieve better results for the students they serve. During this session, Dr. Marissa Payzant, ELA Consultant from the Nebraska Department of Education, discussed the following topics regarding novel studies:
- Text complexity primer
- Aligning standards to the novel instruction
- Selecting novels that are worthy of students’ time and attention
- Using novels as anchor texts in thematic units
- Reading closely and thinking deeply
- Inquiry-based teaching: Discussing literature
- Text analysis/text complexity analysis
- Standards-aligned assessments and culminating writing tasks
