On June 15 and 16, 2015, ESU 11 hosted a workshop entitled, “Educating the Next Generation of Nebraskans about Soil Conservation using the Power of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).” The workshop was facilitated by Harris Payne, Director of Social Studies at the Nebraska Department of Education, and Dr. Leslie Rawlings, Assistant Professor of Geography at Wayne State College. District Conservationist and ESU 11 Board Member, Kevin Breece, also demonstrated how GIS is currently being used in Gosper, Phelps and Kearney Counties. During the course of the two days, teachers gained information about Geographic Information Systems, and learned how to create new lessons for their students regarding the importance of geography, tree conservation and soil conservation.
