On November 13, 2017, ESU 11 hosted a Professional Learning Community meeting for 7-12 grade English Language Arts teachers. PLCs are an ongoing process in which educators work collaboratively to achieve better results for the students they serve. During this session, Dr. Marissa Payzant, ELA Consultant from the Nebraska Department of Education, shared the following with the teachers:
- Strategies to enhance Text Dependent Analysis Writing
- Strategies to enhance ACT Writing
- Student Friendly Standards
- The Making it Stick Website
- NDE’s Standards Instructional Tool
Nebraska Statewide Assessment Director, Valorie Foy, also provided information on the state’s new statewide summative assessment, Nebraska Student-Centered Assessment System (NSCAS). The next PLC will be held in the spring. Between now and the next meeting, teachers will engage in action research and utilize at least one of the strategies that Dr. Payzant demonstrated.
