On October 2, 2017, ESU 11 organized an educational conference for the fourteen schools in the ESU 11 area. This conference, entitled “Redefine Learning,” provided teachers with the opportunity to learn about educational trends, techniques, and effective teaching practices in each of their respective subject areas. The keynote speaker for the day was Dave Weber. His talks focused on leadership and overcoming life’s challenges. In addition to the keynote, there were approximately 70 breakout sessions teachers could choose to attend. Sessions focused on technology integration, art, music, reading, math, classroom management, and career education. Approximately 600 educators, administrators, and para professionals attended the conference.
72 high school students from 7 schools attended a COSI (Center for Science and Industry) video conference presentation titled IN DEPTH: AUTOPSY. Students listened and asked questions of the presenter from the University of Ohio as the pathologists performed a real autopsy. Following the April 23rd joint viewing at ESU #11, teachers returned to their schools with materials to further explore with students the testing for drugs, looking for disease, determination of the type/cause of wounds, and other indicators of the cause of death. While graphic in viewing students were able to see in real time the harvesting of many organs of the body for examination. Students explored the variances in healthy and diseased organs and tissue. Many students and teachers left stating a request to the ESU to repeat this type of activity for their classes.
On October 13th and November 1st, ESU 11 provided a time for school crisis teams to meet, discuss, update, and organize current crisis and safety manuals. Experts recommend that this be done on a yearly basis so district materials are current and easily accessible when needed during a crisis situation. These workdays also provided the opportunity for school teams to work collaboratively with other crisis teams in order to produce a more comprehensive and effective product. This workday was requested by the ESU #11 area counselors as a result of the Level II Crisis Team Training that was provided by Dr. John Dudley on October 6th.
