On September 28 and 29, 2010, ESU #11 hosted a two-day Program Specific professional development series to help 4 – 6 grade teachers implement their reading program effectively so that their students receive the best reading instruction possible. During the two days, participants reviewed how to develop an effective model of implementation for a comprehensive reading program, and how to effectively incorporate direct, explicit instructional techniques in teaching structural analysis of words, word identification, fluency, vocabulary development, and comprehension. They were also able to ask clarifying procedural questions and practice these proven techniques to ensure that the program is being implemented with fidelity.
